Let’s Share the Dark Chocolate Health Benefits with Everyone

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012

It’s official: when it comes to dark chocolate, the health benefits can no longer be denied. According to the site Tampa Bay Online, men who eat at least 2 ounces of dark chocolate a week will lower their chances of having a stroke by 17%.

So, ladies: you’re going to have to share.

Scientific studies have said that women who eat dark chocolate have health benefits, too, but since men eat far less chocolate then women this is pretty big news.

No one’s really quite sure why it works. In the simplest terms, there’s something in dark chocolate that works the same way as fruits and veggies. (So clearly, chocolate covered strawberries must be doubly healthy, right?) And the candy companies are definitely paying attention. There are a ton of options out there now for all of your favorites with dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate, like Snickers Dark. If you’re anything like us, dark chocolate-covered espresso beans are to die for – and now, because of them, you might even live a little longer.

What’s even cooler is that with the web came the ability to buy chocolate online, so you can get candies that aren’t usually available in the stores. Our online candy store carries all sorts of products you may never have heard of, plus things that are difficult to find outside of specialty shops (like REAL Cadbury chocolate cookies – not just the eggs).

So do the right thing, America, and eat more dark chocolate for health reasons. You owe it to your friends and loved ones!

Okay, maybe not – but if the doctors says it can help, then it certainly can’t hurt to stock up on a few favorites. And if you buy chocolate online, you’ll even save a few pence.

Ah, candy: good for your heart AND your wallet.

Old Fashioned Candy is Making a Comeback

Friday, September 14th, 2012

Recently the Huffington Post ran an article highlighting old fashioned candy wrappers, all of which had a 1₵ icon featured prominently on the front. There were some candy bars I don’t see much of anymore — Jiminy Cricket, anyone? — but there were a lot of my current favorites, too: Hershey bars and Krackle bars, and even Halls… you know, before they started making cough drops.

It seems like I’ve been seeing a lot of nostalgia over candy bars from our past. National Public Radio even did a country-wide tour where they looked at “America’s Affection for Hometown Confections.” They searched in shops for our preferences, from chocolates made on the premises to our all-time favorite old fashioned candy bars to giant gumballs.

So besides making my sweet tooth act up a little it got me thinking about the idea of nostalgia candy. It’s pretty easy to buy bulk candy wholesale now, which means that everyone should be able to get their all-time favorite sweet treats whenever they want, right? And now all I notices is how many people are using candy bars at weddings, or throwing parties with candy themes. I wrote about the movie Candy Land a few weeks back: can you think of a more old fashioned candy than peanut brittle?

I mean, really:

Anyway, what I really want to know is what causes YOUR nostalgia: candy bars? Chocolates? Ribbon candies? Maybe it’s hot cocoa or Fun Dip or Mary Janes. I only ask because I’m pretty sure we carry them all, so you can stock up….

(No pressure. Really. I’m just sayin’ that if you really missed your Sugar Babies, you could buy bulk candy at wholesale prices right from us, and we wouldn’t tell a soul.)

So drop us a line and let us know what your favorite old fashioned candy is.  We’d love to know!

Feeding Cows on Candy Corns? Why Not?

Friday, September 7th, 2012

Just when we thought that the world couldn’t get any stranger, we read a story about a farmer who’s feeding his cows on candy.

Say what?

That’s right. The draught is so bad out in the Midwest that one Kentucky farmer has taken to feeding cows with second-hand candy. He mixes it with an “ethanol by-product and a mineral nutrient.” So if your steaks taste a little sweeter or your milk’s a little chocolate-y, you’ll know why.

Oddly enough, he’s not feeding them on candy corns – which we feel would’ve been the obvious choice.

Apparently, this happens more than you might think. Hog farmers have done it in the past to help boost the caloric intake, so giving some Kentucky cows a little hard candy can’t be all that bad, right? So far there haven’t been any side effects from feeding the cows with candy. And it looks like the rains might come soon, so perhaps it’ll only be a quick fix.

But it got us to thinking: what if we offered a whole livestock lines of delicious treats? Then farmers could buy candy online to save themselves a couple of bucks, and we could corner a niche that no one else has. We’re thinking gummy worms for chickens, maybe some Black Crows candy for people who grow corn. (You could tape them to your scarecrows for extra oomph.) We still think candy corn makes the most sense for beef and dairy farmers, though.

And for a healthier choice, the farmers could throw some dried fruit and nuts into the mix.

What do you think? What would you add to our Livestock Line – and which animals would eat what? Give us some suggestions in our comments section!

Candy Land: The Movie

Thursday, June 21st, 2012

No, really – we’re not kidding.

Because in a world where Transformers, Tonka Trucks and even Battleship all find a home on the screen, Sony Pictures has decided that Candy Land: The Movie should be next in line.

Now, we love candy about as much as anyone can. And there is something kind of amazing about a movie that’ll feature sweet and succulent looking Gumdrop Mountains, and the gooey and gluey Molasses Swamp.

But we think the redeeming feature of this particular film will be from a screenwriting change that Sony made this year. What did they do? They teamed up with Columbia pictures and Adam Sandler, that’s what.

That’s right. Adam Sandler – who’s already done more for gumballs than any candy store ever could.

Our love of Happy Madison Productions aside, we’re oddly kinda of excited about this movie. And by “kinda,” we really mean “THIS IS GOING TO BE THE BEST MOVIE EVER!” It’s a movie about candy, for Pete’s sake! CANDY!

Can you imagine the colors? Can you imagine the costumes? And if we may be a bit honest, can you imagine the sales? Because let’s face it: once this movie comes out, there will be Candy Land themed-parties galore. That means plates, napkins, banners, table cloths, balloons, goodie bags: you name it, and someone is going to manufacture it. And parties like that can create great buzz for online candy stores like ours.

Also? It’s a movie about candy. Really.

We can’t wait.
